The Wentworth Highbush Cranberry (Viburnum trilobum 'Wentworth') is a hardy, multi-stemmed deciduous shrub with an upright, spreading habit of growth. Produces bright white spring blooms followed by large red edible berries from late summer through late winter. Fruit is excellent for making jams and jellies. Features red lobed foliage which matures to green and then runs back to a bright red in fall.
'Wentworth' is an outstanding native that has three seasons of interest. In late spring, it produces abundant heads of white flowers. The flowers are followed by clusters of ¼" berries that turn bright glistening red as they ripen in late summer, attracting thrushes and cardinals among other species. Finally, in autumn, the 3-lobed foliage takes on stunning shades of burgundy.
Uses: Screening hedge (plants should be spaced 2-3' apart), wildlife, are a suitable substitute for cranberries. Great for preserves, jams, jellies, meat & game sauces.
Please note that the highbush cranberry is actually not a cranberry. Though its fruit and strongly resembles cranberries in both appearance and taste, the highbush cranberry is a Viburnum, a member of the Caprifoliaceae, or Honeysuckle family.
Plant in full sun or semi-shade, in moist rich loamy very well drained soil types. Tolerant of frost, established plants can also tolerate some drought, but they are helped by supplemental watering during such periods.
